Endless 'drill' might seem 'pointless', but it is because it requires an 'instant' response to a command, so that, when practiced constantly, men become 'accustomed' to responding to commands without thinking about what is being asked of them. 'Basic Training' consisted of getting fit, learning about one's 'kit', how to shoot & how to fight with a bayonet, as well as basic 'war' skills. Many of these men 'initially' despised being there, had no soldierly qualities whatsoever, no battlefield experience & were thrown into the fray with minimal training, the majority being learnt the hard way on the front line. T his man had no option & was required 'by law' to serve in the colours whilst Britain was at war. Then came 'Kitchener's Army, still volunteers, but with no previous military or battlefield experience & given very little training before being sent out.īy 1916 yet still more men were needed to shore up the decreasing ranks & finally we have the 'Conscripted Soldier'. These were volunteer 'Saturday & Sunday' soldiers who were also trained & skilled & may have seen some action.īy mid 1915, these too had taken a hammering & a cry went out for yet more men. Next came the 'Special Reservists' or 'Territorials'. Sadly by late 1914 they had been all but 'decimated'. Most people tend to forget there were actually FOUR different types of army that were involved in the Great War.įirstly, on the outbreak of war in 1914 you had the 'Regular Army' who were professional, skilled & disciplined soldiers that had seen action in the South African wars, etc. Rent would have taken 1/4 of ones weekly wage, but commodities cost less:-Ī packet of 20 cigarettes = 3 (Old) pence In 1914 the value of a shilling = £3.44 by today's standards. (as of 2012) So, 1s 61/2d = one shilling six pence ha'penny = 8 (new) Pence or 12/6d = twelve shillings & six pence = 62 & a 1/2 (new) pence. ġ (old) Penny = 1/2 (new) Penny, depicted thus, '1d'. In 1917, pay was increased to 1s & 3d per day.ġ Shilling = 12 (old) Pence / 5 (new) Pence & was depicted thus, '1/-'.

By 1916, with the addition of steel helmets, box respirators, wire cutters, 'bulldog'shovels, grenades & 'extra' ammo they were soon hauling in excess of 70-90lb in weight!īasic rate of pay for a ' Private' was ' a shilling a day', less ' stoppages' ( married men normally had a ' compulsory stoppage' to be paid to his wife, normally around six pence, but this was supplemented & a 'Private's' wife with no children could expect around 12/6 d per week), plus ' trade & proficiency' allowances & an 'overseas' allowance ( one penny), when serving in foreign parts.
Uniforms were incredibly 'itchy' (& that's without the 'lice!') & the weight of the average kit ('All In' - inclusive of what they wore), was around the 53-58lbs mark back in 1914. Many men were that 'under-nourished' that with the army physical training & '3 square meals a day', within their first year they put on a stone in weight & grew by about 2 inches.Īccordingly, uniform, hat & boot sizes were somewhat smaller than today. So much so that, later on, they created 'Bantam' battalions for men between 5ft-5ft 3in in height.Īverage weight would have been around 8 stone.Īverage age would have been around 30+ in 1914 (original BEF), later, it would go as low as 18 (many lied about their age in order to enlist) & as high as 51 years of age (again, some lied). The average height of the recruit back in 1914 would have been around 5ft 5in, with anyone above 5ft 7in something more of a rarity, whilst there we many more somewhat 'shorter' than your average height.
